If you are feeling unwell, the first thing to do is to see a doctor. You might think this has been said many times, but it seems worth repeating.  Elderly people often discount pain and believe it is a result of old age and they do not see the medical help in time, as Edwin Leap, M. D. an emergency physician in Southern Appalachia said.

He has witnessed it first-hand. In fact, the outcome can be tragic.

Leap also adds: “The older generation, especially Boomers, are very stoic.” “They usually face pains in their life.  So, they are used to them.” Therefore, they delay chest pain for a day or two, and by the time they come to the hospital they have already completed a heart attack. They can trip off a ladder and say that they are ok and would not treat you similarly. The next moment you know they have a subdural hemorrhage and this is a life-threatening situation itself.”

Any new or unknown pain should be checked by a doctor, Leap says, even if it is not severe.

Indeed, some of the aching sources are more prone to be a sign of something serious. The doctor’s advice is 911 or the emergency room if you are having one of the below this type of image.

 1.  Pain with The Loss of Function

If you have sprain and walk on it but still can, it must be it. "It is, notwithstanding, on the off chance that you can't move it and experience torment that things become dire to be examined." The failure to work can be an indication of break, nerve injury, loss of blood stream or a serious contamination.2.  An eye pain that seemingly just comes out of nothing.

2. An Eye Pain That Seemingly Just Comes Out of Nothing.

Sudden or overnight eye pain together with vision changes might mean a dangerous condition and a fast medical attention is always a must as per Michael Hanak, M.  D., a family medication subject matter expert and academic administrator at Rush College Clinical Center in Chicago. It tends to be because of an impeded vein, a disengaged retina, inner draining or intense glaucoma, a serious eye condition brought about by expanded tension inside the eye. Another initial shingles symptom is eye pain, which along with a painful rash is induced by the viral infection, Hanak says.

3.  Chest Pain

An older adult with any chest pain should be evaluated by a doctor, says Hanak, who notes that heartburn doesn’t always present as sudden, always dull pain: “The number of symptoms just the pressure, the heaviness, the difficulty of breathing.” Other symptoms of heart failure include dizziness, fatigue or shortness of breath such as walking upstairs, climbing stairs or doing chores. Chest pain can also be a sign that a blood clot has moved to your lungs or heart which is a life-threatening condition that needs to be treated right away.

4. Either Your Arm, Jaw, Or the Area Between Shoulders Pain.

Such less frequent and less pronounced symptoms of heart attack are common for women rather than men, according to American Heart Association. Nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, dizziness and lightheadedness are some of the symptoms of a heart attack. Intense pain or distress at the back can be a symptom of either an aneurysm in your aorta or your aorta tear, your aorta is the largest blood vessel.

5.  As for The Worst Ever Headache You Ever Had.

A headache pops up every now and then is nothing one should be worried about. More worryingly is one that is more than the usual, Leap says. A fact that headache is also concerning if along with it you experience neck stiffness, weakness or vision changing, or if you have recently smashed your head. And be aware that, if you’re on blood thinners, something as physiologically mundane as scraping your head on a door frame can trigger pathological bleeding inside your head.

6.  Severe Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain that keeps getting worse or is accompanied by vomiting, swelling, or a high fever can indicate acute appendicitis, a severe infection, or diverticulitis. "Note your body," says Leap. "If something comes and goes that's one thing." But if it’s more severe and persistent recently, that suggests I need to examine it further. "

7.  Thigh Pain, Especially If It Is Only One Leg.

More pain in the calf or thigh after a break even if it is not a severe condition can be such a sign as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). This most harmful type of blood clot often happens to the patients who have undergone knee and hip surgeries according to Hanak. Patients often call the pain a cramp and it is usually accompanied by leg swelling or redness. Delay in the treatment of DVT can result in a serious situation known as pulmonary embolism in which blood supply to the lungs is blocked and it can lead to death.

8.  Intense Back Pain That Doesn't Fade Away For 72 Hours.

Back pain is widespread — it affects 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives — and usually improves on its own with rest, ice and pain relievers.

Nevertheless, a persistent pain in the back, lasting longer than three days, can indicate a serious problem.  For that matter a pain that becomes increasingly severe, whenever you try to bend or twist, can be more dangerous, says Douglas D.  Dickson, M.  D. Assistant professor of orthopedic and spine surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Your possible diagnosis may range from a torn muscle or ligament to a compression fracture or the spread of cancer to the spine, Dickson explains.

9. Back Pain with Spinal Weakness and Or Incontinence

Note down numbness of groin or glutes area, problems with passage of urine and incontinence as additional symptoms which might be associated with back pain. These are two of symptoms of a rare but severely conditioned cauda equina syndrome which is caused by nerve compression, Dickson describes. “When that happens,” she says, “the muscles are very tight. “If you don’t seek help immediately, you may lose your job.”

10.  Suffering from Just a Scratched Surface.

For example, while you are doing yard work and some sharp object pricks your hand. Or maybe you are bitten by a dog, or you cut yourself while you are doing a home repair. If the pain from a wound (especially when the wound is red and swollen and the pain is gradually increasing over a few days), this could be a sign of a severe infection that can be deadly if not treated. Organic matter gives a way for infections to spread into the rest of body, as I saw with a splinter that creeped under a nail, and the person said, “It’s ok, I’ll deal with it later.” “Within a couple of days, they have red streaks up their arm and a raging infection.”

11.  After an operation or Injection, There Could Be a Pain.

Spinal injections, biopsies or other therapies that involve injections can sometimes lead to an infection or bleeding. Persistent pain or loss of function after one of such episodes is a serious issue.  Therefore, remember to call your healthcare provider immediately.

12.  Pain with Fever

If you have a temperature as well as pain and it is high, there is a good chance a dangerous infection is present.

·    The pain is in your face or throat. Airway obstruction is possible when the nasal area is swollen, as per Dr.  Leap.

·    Pain might be in the lower or upper back. You could have a kidney infection or a spinal infection that results in paralysis if not treated.

·     The pain correlated with this spot of tender, reddened, inflamed skin. It might be a serious case of a deep infected skin called cellulitis which could spread and cause tissue damage. Maybe you have a fluid-filled abscess that is infected and has to be drained.

·  The pain is at or thereabouts the postoperative site. In the majority of cases post-op infections are observed within thirty days—states Leap. Apart from fever, you may also notice an increase in pain, swelling or drainage (pus) from your incision.
