Benefits Amid Economic Crisis

At a time when Pakistan faces severe economic challenges, high inflation, and stringent conditions imposed by international financial institutions, the federal government's decision to grant a massive pay hike and upgraded allowances to judges of the superior judiciary has sparked widespread debate. Following formal approval by President Asif Ali Zardari, a revised compensation and benefits package has been officially implemented for judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.

Key Highlights of the Revised Salary Package

Under the new government decision, the updated compensation structure is as follows:

  • Chief Justice of Pakistan: The monthly basic salary of the Chief Justice of Pakistan has been set at PKR 1.55 million (1,550,000).
  • Supreme Court Judges: The basic monthly salary for other Supreme Court judges has been increased to PKR 1.5 million (1,500,000), with their allowances aligned to match those of Federal Constitutional Court judges.
  • High Court Judges: The basic monthly salary for High Court judges has been raised to PKR 1.205 million (1,205,000), while the Chief Justices of High Courts will draw PKR 1.254 million.
  • Additional Allowances & Perks: Beyond the basic salary, judges will receive a monthly Judicial Allowance of PKR 1.5 million, a Medical Allowance of PKR 150,000, along with official transport, fuel, house rent allowances, and other privileges.
  • Effective Dates: For Supreme Court judges, the salary hike applies retrospectively from December 10, 2025, including arrears, whereas for High Court judges, it takes effect from July 1, 2026.

Judicial Backlog and Public Expectations

The announcement of this heavy financial package has intensified public scrutiny regarding judicial efficiency. Currently, over 50,000 cases remain pending across the higher and lower courts, leaving countless litigants waiting decades for justice.

Legal analysts and citizens argue that while the state ensures the financial well-being of the judiciary, equal emphasis must be placed on delivering timely and affordable justice to the public. Following this substantial increase in remuneration, there is widespread expectation that the clearance rate of pending cases will improve significantly and the culture of prolonged adjournments will finally come to an end.
