9 Foods You Should Never Order at Church’s Chicken

Church’s Chicken, also known as Texas Chicken in overseas market, does not have any connection with the Christian church. The origin of the company name is based on the last name of the first owner of the outlet and the founder of the first Church’s Chicken in 1952 in San Antonio, Texas. This small one-store restaurant turned into an international fast food chain specializing in poultry products with more than one thousand, five hundred stores and its customers are eager to get hold of plates of mouthwatering fried chicken, succulent biscuits, and crispy battered okra coming from its kitchen every day.

However, when it comes to every item that leaves the aromatically inviting kitchens at Church’s, things may not be as they seem. Quite a few reviewing eaters have some significant issues with some of the chicken chain’s popular food selections. From macaroni to Chicken gravy to crispy chicken to chicken coleslaw, here are nine menu items that are best avoided from Church’s Chicken.

1. The Fried Chicken

While it is true that Church’s Chicken is perhaps most recognized for its fried chicken wings and tenders, some customers and ex-employees suggest that you refrain from ordering chicken from this famed chain. Other than complaints over taste, several consumers who offered their opinions on Reddit also cited that the chicken entrées turned disturbing at some point, should the story be true, which gives a whole new negative twist to what otherwise seemed like tasty chicken drumsticks and strips.

The user also told them that a friend of theirs used to work at Church’s and they said that some of the time they did not practice sanitizing in the backs of the kitchens during chicken prep.

Employees said that discolored, spotted, and likely expired poultry was at times double battered and fried in an effort to camouflage before being sold to the clients anyway. The case was further cemented when yet another former employee joined in on the Reddit and appeared to indirectly support those outrageous practices. “I once worked at Church’s Chicken and this was my first job . . . No way would I eat at one,” they said. ”Not going to say all I experienced, just no freaking way. ” Seeing as there have been customers who have reported allegedly falling ill after indulging in chicken from the franchise, we’d say these comments are worth some consideration prior to your next order, at the very least.

2. The Crinkle Fries

Admit it or not, the French Fries served alongside your main course meal is as much part of the fast food as the burger. As we drive out of the parking with full bellies and a take-out bag warmer than the food, the first thing we pick is a piping hot fried potato thread from the base. We are waiting for that perfect bite of tasty food to kick-start our meal. Sadly, we are not certain that you are going to get your coveted moment of fry-induced bliss if it is Church’s Chicken you are driving away from.

Some of the customers also complained about the general quality and taste of the crinkle-cut fries at the franchise, while others complained that the quantity of the fries packed in the boxes was rather scanty. “$20 for 2 boxes of large fries,” an unsatisfied customer posted on TripAdvisor, “But the only thing large was the box itself. Fries in each was half full.”

Since both of these opinions are fairly regularly reported regarding the side, ending up with an average-tasting or half-filled box of Church’s fries seems a realistic possibility — and what a disheartening scenario that would be as you hungrily pry open your container in the car.

3. The Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and cheese, the noodle-and-cheddar based entrée commonly relished by kids and adults, is meant to be creamy, comforting and delicious. But with an ingredient list as succinct as pasta and cheese, it almost feels like this should be attainable for any fast-casual restaurant… right?

It appears that TikTok uses are wrong in the case of Church’s Chicken. “How does macaroni come out looking like grits? Someone explain,” wrote one user under a video of a bowl of what appears to be the chain’s watery, grainy mac and cheese. “I thought this was egg soup or something,” a responding user said for the unsightly looks of the poorly prepared delicacy. In another video, which pictures a mukbanger trying out various meals from Popeyes and Church’s Chicken, the man looks incredibly disappointed as he takes the taste of Church’s mac and cheese. ”I have no idea who was back there at Church’s Chicken making this but they did a really bad job,” he said this while comparing them to the texture of baby food. Neither of these cases compel us to go out of the way to order something anytime soon, we must say.

4. A Spicy Chicken Sandwich Is One of Its Specialties If Liked.

It seems as if every restaurant today has their twist towards the spicy chicken sandwich, and Church’s chicken is no different.

The Spicy Chicken Sandwich from the chain is quite different and distinctive from the competitors in that patrons are served with a whole, squeezable jalapeño pepper on the side of the sandwich which also comes with a fried poultry filet, pickles, and spicy mayonnaise. Given all of these hot ingredients, you might expect that a pleasantly tear-jerking taste lies in store for you when it comes to Church’s sandwich build.

Unfortunately, the declared spicy sandwich from Church’s Chicken is not as spicy as one would expect it to be, this according to people who have tasted it. The filet is the same one used for the classic chicken sandwich, so the only part that is hot is the spicy mustard and the jalapeño if you dare to apply it. This has left a number of the reviewers on the online platforms to come out and state that the Church’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich is boring, disappointing or nothing special to talk about. Still, since we found that the spice isn’t really that powerful in this one, we think it can work for you if you like your spicy sandwiches subtly spicy.

5. The Honey Mustard Sauce: If You Do Not Like Tang

For instance, honey mustard sauce that includes sweet honey, spicy Dijon mustard, and mayonnaise with the option of adding paprika and/or Worcestershire sauce can feature different degrees of sweetness or acidity. Whether the flavor will be on the sweeter side, or the tangier side is thus a function of every recipe and balance of each of the ingredients used. According to the reviewing consumers, the version of Church Chicken comes with an extra tangy taste. While some might love this taste profile, it is not everyone’s cup of tea — and some diners have put it fairly lowly in their list of favorite sauces from the chain restaurant.

Ranked in at number 5 is the honey mustard sauce, according to the TikTok poster which stated it as her least-liked sauce on the chicken chain. It doesn’t have to be a bad thing, however, whether you like a tangy sauce or not; be prepared for that little edge when going in for the fries or chicken tenders.

6. Church's Signature Hot Sauce

YouTube/Peep THIS Out!

Superhot: Spicy World of Pepper People was a popular Hulu show in 2024, dedicated to pepper cultivators, and had an episode searching for a provider to help create a new hot sauce for Church’s Chicken. The vision of this episode’s winners came to light in April 2024, when Church’s Texas Chicken Signature Hot Sauce was launched in the nation.

Although there are a lot of expectations pinned on this hot new sauce, one finds it slightly disappointing in relation to the other programs. Another Reddit user noted that although people loved the Hulu original, the sauce was lagging behind the recipe defined by the show’s winners and outlined ingredients. “Well, admittedly I haven’t tried it yet,” they noted, “But this appears to be yet another corporate hot sauce. Honestly, it should at least have had a hint of habanero. ” They are disappointed for Bobby and Aurea [the winners] because this sauce is like it has very little of their contribution.”

Apart from this, the same people who do not mind the complete disconnect from the real sauce brand do not even seem to have very high anticipation when it comes to the flavor of the product.

Another sampler in YouTube elaborated that the sauce was not spicy instead resembled a teriyaki sauce with a sweeter taste. Since heat, in essence, is one thing that should be provided by any true hot sauce, we cannot be convinced as to the superiority of this one.

7. The Coleslaw

Tik Tok/@kisstheque

Coleslaw started in the Netherlands though it has evolved into a standard side dish in American cuisine. Since fried poultry and dressed chopped veggies are a surprisingly tasty combination, Church’s Texas Chicken provides cups of coleslaw made of carrots and cabbage for its clients who prefer something refreshing on their tongues between bites of salty or spicy chicken.

However, you might want to think twice about choosing coleslaw next time you visit Church’s as there are numerous bizarre experiences related to the side numerous consumers have brought forth to diminish your desire for the side. One of them is a rather disturbing video where a TikTok user received an order that was completely frozen — and the half-frozen cabbage shown in the video makes one want to vomit. A second strange encounter with Church’s coleslaw was reported by a Redditor who said that they had noticed a stench of chemicals emanating from it several times. However, there are many customers who ate in the chain’s vegetable side and liked it. Yeah, if you do decide to go for it, we certainly hope your experience does not involve either icy or smelly cabbage.

8. The Sweet Tea

Oh, sweet tea! Oh, the pride and joy of all the Southerners out there! A extremely basic beverage made from black tea, the drink gets its unique and rather]sweet taste from sugar stirred into the tea while it is still hot.

Church’s Chicken, originally from Texas, makes sure it represents the Southern state well enough to serving its unsweet tea, and its sweet. Unfortunately, however, it is not a version that can be considered encouraging based on the reaction from consumers of alcoholic beverages.

Lack of uniformity in prepare preparation and quality, freshness issues, and low sweetness have all been pointed out negatively by consumers of Church’s Texas Chicken in the social media platforms regarding the sweet tea beverage. Notably, one of the recent Quora commenters said the following: “Sometimes I have gotten it and it’s the best tea I’ve ever had. ”‘But there are also times you get some and it is just sugary water with a very faint brown color. ’ Yuck! Although it could be hard to beat the refreshment that comes with a well-prepared sweet tea for instance, likewise, it could be disappointing when one takes a big Spearmint with a lowly prepared sweet tea; thus bear in mind these complaints when informing the cashier which beverage you prefer next time you visit Church’s.

9. They Presented a Tenders ‘N Shrimp Box

YouTube/RodrickEats

The Tenders ‘N Shrimp is a box of creating battered butter/database Query fly shrimp, crispy fried chicken tenders, and salty crinkle fries, which, with the inclusion of a buttermilk biscuit sounds mouth-watering even in the description. But there was one fake which was posted on Reddit, to which the real thing was so real, that the mouthwatering image was shattered completely.

The only negative comment seen for Church’s Chicken was one consumer from r/Sacramento, who was served such a terrible shrimp ‘n chicken box that it may be worth considering for those who want to try it in the future. An extremely dissatisfied user shared the photo of the received order which included a small portion of crunchy, colorless fries, two chicken strips and reduced amount of shrunken shrimp and commenters went nuts. ”Can’t stop staring into the box of nothing,” said one while another described the result as “disturbing. Some even pushed the original poster to seek a refund. And we can’t say we fault them in this case. Although, of course this atrocity is a possible one-off incident it appears to be enough to discourage some from ever taken a chance on it again. Will you conform to them, or will you have the audacity to get a dose from Church’s, do you think a better one is around the corner? The choice is yours.
