It was a strange sequence that two major events took place
before the 78th Independence Day. On the evening of August 8, Arshad Nadeem set
a new record for javelin throw in the 118-year history of the Olympics in
Paris, for which he was awarded a gold medal. This great victory instilled a
spirit of unity in the divided nation and raised its head with pride. Then just
four days later came the news that created a sensation in the national life
that the army had taken into custody the former Director General of ISI and a
very powerful military officer and started court martialing him. As soon as
this news was broadcast, the deeds of Lieutenant General (R) Faiz Hameed
started being described from different quarters and it was felt as if he was
the mastermind and responsible for all the mishaps. Apart from fueling the
booty market, he conspired to foment rebellion within the army and obtain
favorable verdicts from Pakistan's judiciary.
Generals have been court-martialled in the past, but this time
the uproar and the news that is being broadcast from time to time has created a
stir and the uncertain situation is becoming more serious. It seems that almost
all state institutions are under severe strain and their accountability systems
have either become completely ineffective or non-existent. Undoubtedly, our
situation is very bad, but not so much that we can cover ourselves with
despair. Our mass media should avoid sensationalism and excessive myth-making
that time is critical and matters are extremely sensitive. The most organized
institution of the country i.e. the army is facing a tough time as some
irresponsible elements are running a campaign to spoil its image and defame it
in the outside world. On May 9, 2023, the military establishment suffered a lot
of injuries. This has been the effort of our enemies since the first day to
break the relationship of trust between the armed forces of Pakistan and the
people and to create factions within the army. In this way (God willing)
Pakistan Army will also have the same fate that has happened in Iraq and Libya.
Unfortunately, a mindset is being created within us that holds
the army responsible for all the evils, but thanks be to Allah, the great
majority of Pakistan stands side by side with its army and firmly believes in
this matter. That our armed forces are among the best in the world in terms of
professional standards and India is overwhelmed by its awe. Thanks to our
nuclear scientists, Pakistan is far ahead of India in nuclear capability and
missile technology. Due to these reasons, Pakistan is free and sovereign and
the armed forces are standing with full force against terrorism.
All our institutions are in need of reform at this time. The
ongoing infighting within the judiciary has greatly affected the reputation of
this most important institution of Pakistan and the political and
constitutional conflicts are taking a serious form. The current Chief Justice
of Pakistan, Qazi Faiz Isa, who established good traditions during his tenure,
restored the full court system. During his tenure, the Supreme Court admitted
that Mr. Bhutto did not have a fair trial. Those unusual cases which were in
cold storage for years were heard and good judgments came out, but the Chief
Justice went a little further in his enthusiasm. By his order, the debates in
the full court were televised live. This benefited the people a lot and they
started to know which lawyers and judges have the mental capacity and which
issues are gaining importance, but some judges felt that they were exposed to
the public. are being done, on this basis they united against the Chief Justice
and formed a front. Apart from this, this division has reached the lower courts
as well as the high courts and the entire judicial system is losing its
credibility. In order to change this painful situation, our Parliament will
have to act with extraordinary prudence and wisdom.
At the moment, the court martial of General (R) Faiz Hameed is the most talked
about topic, about which there are two opinions.
One is that the accountability should be done in such a way
that the dirt of all the institutions is cleared and the mistakes of the past
should also be rectified. Another view is that rather than spreading too much,
the corrupted cases should be contained with an unusual strategy. Both of these
positions hold weight, but we also have to see how shallow we can afford today.
The authority has to decide whether to arrange for the healing of the wounds or
to inflict them further. No doubt the operation seems necessary to a certain
extent, but it requires great care. We remember that one of our dear ones had
an unbearable pain in her tooth, so she went to the doctor and showed the tooth
to the doctor while crying. With 'extraordinary skill' he removed the corresponding
tooth which was perfectly fine, so that on the one hand the pain of the tooth
increased and on the other hand it became difficult to stop the flow of blood.
Such accidents keep happening. We would advise our military leadership to take
some necessary steps with all wisdom to protect their institution from all
calamities and closely examine to see if a character like Faiz Hameed is a
center of strength within the army. How are they made?
