 Islamabad: Municipal Elections

Local bodies are the main component of any country's democratic system and the nursery for the growth of democracy, but in Pakistan they are given little attention. The reason for this is the distribution of development funds of the local government representatives among the members of the national and provincial assemblies. That's why the local body elections are conducted rarely and the constitutional requirements are not followed. The last elections of the Metropolitan Corporation of the federal capital Islamabad were held in 2015, which expired on February 15, 2021. During this time, the PML-N and PTI governments remained in power in the federation, who neither took interest in providing funds to the corporation nor held its elections.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has released the schedule for holding corporation elections on September 29, breaking this long period of cold weather. Deputy Commissioner Islamabad has been appointed as District Returning Officer and returning officers have also been announced to monitor the elections. The number of union councils of the Metropolitan Corporation has been increased to 125. Nomination papers will be received from August 16 to 20 and the papers will be withdrawn on September 5 after the legal process is completed. Along with the announcement of the election schedule, announcement of new schemes and transfer of government officials has been banned in Islamabad. About one million voters will exercise their right to vote in the municipal elections of the federal capital. Last time, due to non-availability of funds and other reasons, the corporation remained suspended and could not do any work for the public. Hopefully that won't happen this time.
