New Gas Reserves in Pakistan: IA Hashmi

Another good news for the country’s economy has come out that Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has discovered new gas reserves in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange about them that the natural reserves were obtained from the Betai 2 well by drilling 5,080 meters deep. The well is producing 2.14 million cubic feet of gas and 74 barrels of light crude oil per day at a pressure of 435 pounds per square inch. According to OGDCL, this is the first hydrocarbon discovery in the Samansak Formation of the Wali Block, which will help increase the local supply of hydrocarbons in the country and reduce the demand for gas.

In 2021, large oil and gas reserves were also discovered in Bettani area of Lakki Marwat district and in 2022 in Bannu West Block Tehsil Shiva in North Waziristan. A refinery has also been established at Shiva. About 35 percent of Pakistan’s energy needs are met by gas. Its daily consumption is more than 6.5 billion, while daily production is about 3.3 billion cubic feet. In the last 6 months, gas reserves have increased due to major discoveries, but it is still insufficient for the country's needs.

According to a report by the Ministry of Energy, in 2022, the daily production of natural gas in different parts of the country was 3200 million cubic feet, while after cleaning it, 3000 cubic feet of pure gas was obtained. 1800 million cubic feet of gas was provided to domestic consumers daily, while 1200 million cubic feet of gas was provided to industry, CNG pumps and energy generation daily. In 2022, 400 million cubic feet of gas was produced daily from different places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. There is no shortage of resources in Pakistan, they need to be utilized.
