A headline can ruin a good piece of writing.
I've done it myself. You spend hours researching a subject, write a decent piece, edit it twice—and then give it a headline that sounds like it belongs on a school noticeboard.
That happens more often than writers admit.
Here are 10 headline mistakes I keep seeing.
1. Writing a headline that is simply a label
“Social Media Marketing Tips.”
That's not really a headline. It's a description of a subject.
Tell me something I don't already know from the subject itself.
2. Trying to be too clever
Some headlines are so clever that you have no idea what the story is about.
If the reader has to stop and decode the joke, you've already made the job harder than it needs to be.
3. Making a promise you can't keep
“10 Ways to Become a Millionaire in 30 Days.”
Really?
The headline may get attention, but the reader will notice very quickly when the article doesn't come close to delivering that promise.
4. Starting with “10 Ways to...” every time
There's nothing wrong with a numbered headline.
The problem is using the same formula until every piece of content starts looking like the previous one.
Sometimes one strong sentence is enough.
5. Making the headline too long
I've seen headlines that practically tell the whole story before the reader reaches the article.
Cut it.
If removing five words makes the headline stronger, those five words didn't belong there.
6. Forgetting the reader
“Email Marketing Strategies for Businesses” is broad.
“Why Your Cold Emails Get Ignored” feels different.
The second one sounds like it is talking to somebody who actually has a problem.
That's the person you want.
7. Using empty words
“Ultimate.”
“Powerful.”
“Essential.”
“Effective.”
These words aren't automatically bad, but they are often doing very little work. If the headline still makes sense after removing them, remove them.
8. Using clickbait because everyone else is doing it
“You Won't Believe What Happened Next!”
I can believe it.
I've seen the headline before.
Curiosity is useful. Cheap tricks aren't the same thing as curiosity.
9. Writing for everybody
A headline aimed at everyone usually speaks strongly to nobody.
A business owner, a first-time blogger and an experienced copywriter don't necessarily respond to the same headline.
Know who you're trying to reach.
10. Stopping at the first headline
This is probably the one writers underestimate most.
The first headline that comes into your head is often just a working title.
Write another.
Then another.
Change the angle. Make it more specific. Try a question. Remove a word. Put the reader's problem first.
Sometimes the best headline appears only after you've written six bad ones.
And that's fine.
A headline doesn't have to sound clever.
It has to make the right person want to read the next sentence.
That's the job.
