How to Write a Headline That Makes People Stop

A good article can disappear behind a weak headline.

You may have spent two hours researching a topic, checking facts, rewriting paragraphs, and polishing every sentence. But if the headline sounds flat, most people will never reach the first paragraph.

The headline is the doorway.

And readers decide very quickly whether to walk through it.

A strong headline usually does one or more of these things:

  • Promises a useful answer—How to Write Better Headlines Without Sounding Clickbait
  • Creates curiosity—The Headline Mistake Most New Copywriters Make
  • Challenges an assumption—Your Headline Doesn't Need to Be Clever. It Needs to Be Clear.
  • Uses a specific benefit—5 Headline Changes That Can Make Your Posts Easier to Read
  • Speaks directly to a problem—Nobody Is Reading Your Posts? Start With the Headline.

Notice something?

None of these headlines needs complicated vocabulary.

They work because the reader immediately understands what is at stake.

Before writing your headline, ask yourself:

Who am I trying to stop?

A business owner? A beginner copywriter? A busy executive? A curious reader scrolling through Facebook?

Then ask:

What would make that person care enough to keep reading?

That's where headline writing becomes copywriting.

A headline isn't supposed to tell the entire story. It should give the reader a reason to want the next sentence.

And avoid the temptation to make every headline sound dramatic.

Clarity beats cleverness. Specificity beats hype. Relevance beats noise.

Try writing five different headlines for the same article. Don't settle for the first one that comes to mind.

Your first headline is often just the starting point.

The best headline doesn't shout at the reader.

It gives the reader a reason to stop.

Headline

Specificity
Relevance
