AI and possibly collaborating with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, would presumably be one of the key highlights at Apple’s developers’ conference on Monday.
Apple on Monday will try
to change the minds of skeptics about its AI plan as competitors move forward
in using artificial intelligence (AI).
AI and perhaps even cooperation
with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is likely to be a prominent focus at the
beginning of Apple’s WWDC developers’ conference in Silicon Valley, say
researchers.
The conference is Apple’s
annual get-together with developers focused on iPads, Macs, and iPhone apps,
and Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook will try his best to convince the people
that the company is an AI giant.

Apple has been sneaking AI
capabilities into its devices for some time now, but it still lacks a clear AI
plan or, like, embraces the ChatGPT-type generative AI that went viral in late
2022.
Competitors, such
as Microsoft and Google, have, on the other hand, launched their
products in quick successions thereby causing Microsoft and the AI chip
maker Nvidia to recently leapfrog Apple to become the world’s largest
companies based on the value of the stocks.
While Apple’s stock is
still going up and down since the start of the AI hype, its enthusiasts view
Monday’s releases as the beginning of a new journey for the iPhone
manufacturer.
Besides, while silencing
has been deafening, that will all change on June 10, when Apple crosses the AI
Rubicon, as Dipanjan Chatterjee of Forrester has predicted. Indeed, it is
highly probable that at the core of both, an update to the Apple iPhone
operating system, iOS 18, will be announced, with AI being integrated as a
pivotal feature.
Of course, Silicon Valley
is convinced that generative AI will dramatically transform the human
experience of using smartphones and computers, although the technology is still
far from mature, and the positive effects from it are yet to be realized.
Also floated as a rumor is
yet another ‘flagship’ OpenAI integration that promises an iPhone-specific
chatbot to turbocharge ‘the execrated Siri’.
These announcements will
pave the way for a launch later this year of an iPhone 16 and create ‘a
renaissance of growth for Apple, according to Wedbush Securities senior analyst
Daniel Ives.
Given that most of Apple’s
revenue comes from iPhones, the AI is expected to seek to have Apple’s devices
and services more integrated, said, Creative Strategies analyst Carolina
Milanesi.
“It is at this point that
Apple gets people to upgrade to the latest iPhone,” Milanesi contributed. “We
will see if Apple gives them a compelling reason to do that. ”
The announcements made at
WWDC will be a ‘litmus test’ of how effectively Apple can begin the process of
integrating the abilities of ChatGPT-like generative AI across all its gadgets
and platforms, according to Gadjo Sevilla, a senior analyst at eMarketer.
“Any stumble on the part
of Apple at this moment may lead to it being pushed out of its position as one
of the leading technology innovators and companies, especially given the fact
that it is now in a position where it is between two large AI companies that
have real products and road maps of AI product releases stretching well into
the next two years.”
CEO Cook already teed up
his enthusiasm for AI by equipping the latest iPad and MacBook launches with
superior and AI-prepped chips earlier this year.
However, the problem for
Apple is where to incorporate the technology without diluting the core argument
of the recently advertised enhanced user privacy and security, noted the
analysts.
ChatGPT-style AI is
insatiable and ever hungry for data and Apple will be keen to play the AI war
while being cautious on data privacy as it is expected from the company.
“If Apple becomes too
possessive of an AI ecosystem, they may stagnate,” Sevilla said “while other
companies are publicly racing forward and occasionally winning at a disastrous
AI rate.”
