Islamabad (Ishraq Ahmed Hashmi): Almost half of NAB's 179 "mega-corruption cases" (the list of which was submitted to the Supreme Court in 2015) have been closed or terminated and the beneficiaries include Mian Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Parvaiz Ashraf, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, Nawab Aslam Khan Raisani and others are included. The case against Asif Ali Zardari of assets in excess of income was also included in the list, but he was acquitted of this case. Among the mega corruption cases, NAB has also closed the inquiries against former head of HBL, Younis Habib, Hussain Haqqani, Senator Sahar Kamran, Shoon Group and others. Out of these 179 cases, only 10 have been convicted so far.
After updating the information by NAB, now the
cases of acquittal have increased to 19. According to the details, as per the
information shared by NAB on its official website on the direction of the
Supreme Court, a list of 179 mega cases was submitted to the Supreme Court in
May 2015. At that time, these 179 mega corruption cases included 81 inquiries,
52 investigations and 46 judicial references. Almost nine years later, the
details of these cases include three inquiries and four investigations, with 87
references pending and 85 cases (mostly inquiries and investigations) disposed
of as on April 30, 2024. References are also included in these 85 cases.
Accountability courts gave verdicts in favor of or against the accused. NAB
closed the investigation in July 2023 against Mian Nawaz Sharif, Mian Shehbaz
Sharif and others in the case of misuse of powers regarding the construction of
the road from Raiwand to the residence of the Sharif family. Another
investigation against Nawaz Sharif in the case of alleged illegal appointments
in FIA was closed by NAB in 2017. In 2017, NAB also closed an inquiry against
former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, his then Principal Secretary and
others for alleged misuse of powers in releasing funds for the construction of
dual road from Sahawa to Chakwal and from Mandira to Gujar Khan. had done In
2021, NAB closed the investigation in the alleged case of assets in excess of
income against Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
Three inquiries are still pending due to the
injunction order of the Lahore High Court. Even after nine years, the
investigation against the administration of DHA Valley Islamabad and others is
going on. Similarly, the investigation against the former Minister of Commerce
and Industry Mir Abdul Ghafoor Lahri is also going on. Among the 179 mega
corruption cases, the case of investigation against the CDA officials and BNP
Group management in the construction of Grand Hyatt Tower is also included.
Regarding the status of this case, NAB says that the Supreme Court has already
pronounced a decision on this matter. Out of these 179 cases, only ten
convictions have been delivered so far, including the plea bargain cases. So
far only 19 cases have been acquitted.
