WASHINGTON (east-west-news) — The 2024 NATO Summit in D.C. is underway and many are wondering how this three-day event will impact their commute.
Tuesday,
the first major commuter day with significant closures in place, saw heavy
traffic for drivers and commuters starting during the morning rush hour,
carrying on into the afternoon.
Commuters
we talked to Tuesday said their drive times in the city doubled, or even
tripled, in some cases during the morning commute along major routes.
“I was just
coming in from Northwest DC, near the Maryland and Bethesda border, and it took
me probably 30 or 45 minutes to get [to Foggy Bottom], which is why I’m now
filling up my tank. Normally takes you 15, 20 minutes. It’s been pretty bad
today,” said driver Kaya Suner.
Other
drivers we caught up with told us they’re making changes to their normal
driving routines to try to beat the traffic this week.
“We’ve set
up two maps systems, running Apple Maps and Google Maps at the same time. Each
time we need to navigate to a place, we’re checking what the quickest route is
so that we can make sure we’re not getting stuck in this traffic,” said Dan
Ryan, who left extra early this morning to try to avoid traffic around the NATO
Summit.
