In its 77-year history, the railway department in Pakistan has
been plagued by poor performance and losses except in the 1960s. In this
context, according to a surprising media report, it has earned Rs. 14 billion
rupees more than the same period of . The number of stations is 625 and the
maximum speed of trains is fixed at 120 km per hour, but there is a lot of room
for development in today's advanced age. Railways are considered the cheapest
and safest means of travel around the world, including in Pakistan. The
department's revenue included passenger trains as well as freight cars, but
gradually it fell victim to political tensions, which led to its decline.
And the most loss-making departments in the period of more than
45 years were Railways and PIA. During this period, freight trains which were
earlier giving huge profit in each section, their operation has reduced to an
estimated 10% today. is also less. Many branch lines have been completely
closed for three to four decades and the railway lands are occupied by people.
In the past, overstaffing was done on political grounds. The infrastructure of
Pakistan Railways is so efficient that today the profit of 33 billion rupees is
considered as a lot of spoils when in reality it should have been many times
more. Considering the above situation as encouraging, the railway department
can be cleared of political expediency and put back on its feet.
